Sauromatum venosum

Sauromatum venosum is a member of the Araceae family or the Aroid family. It is a relative to the infamous Amorphophallus genus of plants It is a tuberous perennial from the woodlands of the Himalayas and in E. and W. Africa.

At maturity, Sauromatum sends forth it%26#039;s flower first. The flower emits a foul smelling oder resembling dead meat. This odor is what draws flies to the flower to pollinate the flower. There are numerous plants that emit a foul odor. These plants are often called %26quot;carrion plants%26quot;. The flower will die in a few days and the leaf will emerge later in the Spring.

On one of the bulbs, there is a spent flower. As seen below, The white threads you see are the male parts of the flower-the stamens. The brown part you see below the stamens are the female part of the flower.
